R Due to the high percentage rate of black men in prison African Americans are some what looked down upon. There are multiple situations were African Americans have been treated as if they are less than any other race and it comes form the background of blacks and the current situations we tend to be in. When people see a young black African American who may have on big baggy clothes, a baseball cap on and listen to a certain type of music they may characterize them as a thug or gangster only because of what the way they view us. In our society people judge your character off of what they see if they don’t take the time out to get to know you. In cases that is what happens to a lot of African Americans, mostly men only because it is how society labels them. This is how we are looked down on, when the average black man is looked at he is judge based on what the impression of black men period is and in a lot of cases it isn’t always positive. Since there are so many black men that are incarcerated it makes people look at us as a whole and gives them reason to believe that maybe not all but most black men are criminals. That itself will change a lot of people opinion on how they view black men and it will determine how much they will respect them in society. Police officers have a tendency to judge black men as society characterizes them. This is why there are so many situations where African Americans feel as if law enforcers harass them when they have done nothing wrong. This is also because of the high percentage blacks who are in jail so it becomes more commonly for an officer to address a black man about a crime than it would be for a white man.
