Untreated mental illness, and disability can cause indivisuals to become paranoid, anxious, and depressed, making it difficult or impossible to maintain employment, pay bills, or keep supportive social relationships. Substance abuse can drain finacial resources, can cause job or housing loss, and erode social relationships. Substance abuse is quite prevalent in the homeless population. Lack of education, such as dropping out of school which in turn is an obstacle for finding a higher paying job. Many people who flee from domestic violence often must quickly adapt to massive life changes. They find it extremely difficult to find a secure place of residence and/or a job. Most indivisuals being discharged from prison have few resources to get back on their feet and have ended personal contacts that may provide support.
